Special Features of the Rotation Our rotation is open to residents, medical students, pharmacists, and pharmacy students. We provide daily classroom didactics as well as inpatient rounds. We use high-fidelity simulation training to both educate and evaluate rotators. All rotators are provided with 300MB+ of supplemental reading on CD. A toxicology journal club is also conducted once per rotation.

Special Features of the Rotation 1) Provide after-hours emergency coverage for multiplace hyperbaric oxygen facility. 2) Monthly laboratory-based toxicology interactions with state laboratories (Public Health, Public Safety, Medical Examiner's Office). 3) Evaluation of air quality and other occupational exposures as component of hospital Occupational Health and Safety Department. 4) Industrial site visits to evaluate potential for toxicology-related exposures (variable scheduling).5) Review of medical-legal cases and participation in literature review and other aspects.

Variable time spent per week. Mondays and Fridays are at the hospital with the Toxicology fellows performing bedside consultations. Tuesday is our primary didactic day and usually lasts about 5 hours. Wednesdays are devoted to didactic conference with the Emergency Medicine residency. Thursday is a didactic day at the regional poison control center and usually lasts about 5 hours.

Special Features of the Rotation Our diverse catchment area provides a broad base of toxicology experience. We cover Oregon, Alaska, and Guam. This allows us to experience toxicology in Frontier, Rural, and Urban settings as well as discuss cases that involve tropical (e.g. marine envenomations, stonefish, lionfish, etc), temperate (e.g mushrooms, shellfish poisoning[domoic acid, etc]), and desert (e.g. snakebites) as well as the variety of ingestions seen in these diverse locations.

Special Features of the Rotation Wilderness Medicine education is also embedded into the rotation: Wilderness Medicine focuses on the care of patients in remote environments lacking typical health care facility resources. This course will also introduce students/residents/fellows to the epidemiology, pathophysiology and clinical practice of Wilderness Medicine with planned regular outings to the Blue Ridge Mountains and George Washington National Forrest.
