Medical Toxicology Institute

The Medical Toxicology Institute For Life-Long Learning In Medical Toxicology is an umbrella organization designed to ensure life long learning educational opportunities and career growth for medical toxicologists employing a variety of educational approaches.  The Medical Toxicology Institute focuses on enhancing the skill set of practicing medical throughout their careers once they have completed their formal fellowship training through innovative teaching techniques utilizing one-on-one mentoring, on-line learning and more traditional symposia and courses. The Medical Toxicology Institute hopes to target specific skills reflecting the heterogeneity of medical toxicology that may advance member career's both academically and in the practice arena.  The following MTI programs will be supported by this visionary investment in the future of medical toxicology.

  • MTF Innovative Teaching Award

This award supports the development of practical programs that utilize novel tools to provide education on relevant issues in medical toxicology. The MTF Innovative Teaching Award supports the development of pioneering or progressive educational activities, methodologies, and/or curriculum, with the results to be presented at the annual ACMT Spring Conference. The contemplated programs are not limited by format – the focus is on innovation in concept, technique, and/or technology; however, the end-product should be an educational activity focusing on some aspect of medical toxicology (i.e. concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of human poisoning). The intended audience may be medical professionals and/or the public.

This award process will be a two year cycle, in which three applicants will present their idea at the Spring Conference and the highest ranked presenter will then be funded to develop their idea and present again at the subsequent Spring Conference. The first award of $5,000 will be given following the 2011 Spring Conference.

This program brings together medical toxicology mentors and mentees for one-on-one apprenticeship opportunities that will provide hands on practical training for skill development and refinement. Examples of such training include tutelage in IME report writing, interpretation of outpatient tests such as methacholine challenges, interpretation of industrial hygiene data and how to set up an ongoing occupational monitoring program, business skill development, legal report writing critique, basic science and clinical research skill development, and public speaking and lecture development.
