(PRESS RELEASE)
April 30, 2019, Phoenix, AZ — The American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT) recently concluded its 16th Annual Scientific Meeting in San Francisco (April 11-14), where 162 research abstracts and more than 25 expert lectures on human poisoning were presented to an international group of more than 300 attendees from various medical specialties. Several ACMT members also received awards for research and service to ACMT and the field of Medical Toxicology.
ACMT Executive Director Paul Wax, MD, FACMT, received the 2019 Matthew J. Ellenhorn Award for his outstanding service to ACMT. The annual Ellenhorn Award honors an individual who has made extraordinary contributions to the field of medical toxicology. In her nomination letter, Dr. Erica Liebelt said, “I cannot think of a single medical toxicologist who has done more for the advancement of the specialty of Medical Toxicology in the last 10 years. He emulates the distinguished career of Dr. Ellenhorn as a clinician, educator, and researcher. Paul’s vision, creative thinking, expertise, insight, and not always wanting to accept the “status quo,” provide the foundation for his extraordinary contributions that have allowed the specialty to grow and reach a national respect among all the medical specialties”.
In his acceptance, Paul spoke proudly of his experience at ACMT and as a practicing medical toxicologist. "It was such an honor to receive this lifetime achievement award, and to join such an illustrious group of distinguished medical toxicologists. However, my work for ACMT is far from over, and I plan to give it my all in the years ahead to continue to help the College work toward achieving its strategic mission," said Dr. Wax.
